Portugal

Where To Stay

If you’re flying into Lisbon you have a few choices of where you can stay and this really depends on your priorities. I will include a few options for hotels. and will tell you in each one what the vibe is, so some hotels will place you close to the ancient ruins, some may be in Lisbon to give you a central location, and some may be down by the beach. Please note this is a photo of Benagil Sea Cave which is about 2.5 hours from Lisbon- so it is doable if you fly in here, but there may be a better hotel if you want to spend a few days. Make sure you read my reasoning for each hotel before making your decision and please note I do a lot of research into these hotels so you don’t have to.

Things To Do

What you’re going to do in Portugal depends largely on where you choose to stay and what your priorities are for your visit. Are you prioritizing history and culture? Do you want a local feel? Do you want a beach holiday? Do you want to be in the mountains drinking wine? Lucky for you not only is this all very accessible, but you don’t have to choose just one. You can split up your time among different cities or you can base yourself in Lisbon (my recommendation if you’re not accustomed to travel or backpack style travel).

Public Transportation if you opt to stay in Lisbon, public transportation is very accessible and there’s really never a need for a cab or rental car. Not only do they have a robust metro system, but they have historic yellow trams that run throughout the city- this is something very unique to Portugal. Consider getting the 24‑hour pass or the Lisboa Card (which may also include museum entries).

For rail between major cities (e.g., Lisbon ↔ Porto), book ahead to secure best fares and seats (especially for the Alfa Pendular service).
