Honest Review
Colombia wasn’t one of my favorite places. While they’re were a lot of positives and great memories made there was also some things I didn’t care for when staying here. I had the most fun when we stayed in the city center and went to local bars.
A pilot had told my husband that Cartagena was his favorite city he’s ever visited and how he goes back whenever he has the chance, he praised the beaches. Naturally, I had to see for myself. While the beaches aren’t bad they’re not necessarily something I would praise either. The water is nice, but it’s not the clear water you find in the Caribbean or Greece. Cartagena is a very tourist city and because of this you can always expect to try to be sold things. However, this city in particular we were trying to be sold things every few minutes. When walking to the beach we were approached by street vendors every few minutes and once on the beach we were constantly being bombarded by vendors. So much so, that it really took away from the experience. This is not something I typically mind- and everyone needs to make a living. However, of all the places I’ve visited I think Cartagena was one of-if not the most aggressive with trying to sell us.
During my visit I had a beach day, where I indulged in some drinks. This is where I really messed up, I was drinking piña coladas on the beach. Everyone always talks about not drinking the water in certain countries but it didn’t even cross my mind not to have any ice. My biggest recommendation if you visit don’t drink the water and don’t have any ice. I ended up getting really sick for about 3 days. I couldn’t leave the bed, I had a fever, I was freezing cold even though it was really hot- I couldn’t remember the last time I was this sick.
I wouldn’t write Colombia off your list just yet. I covered what didn’t go right- but a lot did go right too. I loved walking around the city- it felt very safe. The locals were all very friendly and the food was incredible, I never had a bad meal that’s for sure. Going out for food and drinks at night has such a lively atmosphere and makes for a perfect date night.
Would I go back? Maybe. If I were to go back to Colombia I think I may try another city, I’d love to see Medellín. If a friend invited me to Cartagena I probably would give it another chance and hope that perhaps my experience was a one off. However, it’s not somewhere I’m rushing to go back to.
My advice: see for yourself but only if you’ve traveled quite a bit and this is somewhere you really want to go. If you don’t travel much, there are other cities you can probably visit for the same price that will give you a better experience. However, if you’re already well traveled and want to add a trip to Colombia go for it and consider other cities than just Cartagena.

Where To Stay?
When I came to visit Colombia I chose to visit Cartagena and did some research about the area. I split my time between two hotels: one in city center and one on the beach to get a feel for both. This photo here was taken at the infinity pool at my resort. .
Things To Do first of all eat everything. The food is amazing, all so fresh and so delicious. Enjoy drinks on the beach but beware of the tap water and anything with ice.
Where to eat: The photo below was taken at San Martin Restaurante located just a few blocks from Playa de Bocagrande. The food was delicious, if we ever go back this will be one of our first stops.
Where to go for drinks: Terraza Bar 360 has a beautiful rooftop you can enjoy some drinks and a view. Porthos Steakhouse & Pub Cartagena was such a vibe honestly. We stumbled into this pub at night to grab a drink and a bite to eat and fell in love with the atmosphere. What was meant to be a quick bite to eat turned into several drinks and lots of good eats.
Excursions: I do recommend taking a day to explore city center and getting a taste for the local culture, also taking a day to relax by the beach, and every other day you’re there try something fun like: island hopping or a boat party, visit the Rosario Islands and go snorkeling, or enjoy the white sand beach at Palma Island. Like adrenaline? There’s jet ski rentals too. Something for everyone. Make the most out of your trip!

Lessons Learned
Avoid Major Tourist Beaches and Opt for a Local Vibe
What I thought was going to be a relaxing day at the beach turned into a string of continuous interruptions. If I had to go back and do it again I’d look up some local gems instead of opting for the popular beaches.
How much is a trip to Cartagena?
I’d say once you’re there everything is pretty affordable. The conversion rate is strong for USD and EURO. However, it’s important to keep in mind Cartagena is still a very popular tourist destination and this means prices will naturally be bit higher.
Food and Drinks
When in Cartagena I can honestly say I never had a bad meal. However, to ensure you have the same experience you can always check on google reviews and see how other people rate the food. You can also check to see where the locals are eating, as this will ensure cheaper prices as well. Like I said before never drink the tap water, avoid ice, and don’t get any frozen drinks, i.e Pina coladas. Please learn from me.
